what is rose?

A lot of people express their loves and make a sayings using a word Rose. even use it to pictures how are their lovers are... majority described and put rose in a great way a very nice role... but then have u ever found that rose are not that good? there's a lot of flower as pretty as rose, as attractive as rose but why Rose? why not tulip? today i compare these two sayings

"A thorn defends the rose, harming only those who would steal the blossom..." or "a Thorn will help the rose taking a blood from those who want to love it just to keep its red..."
